On our way back from Toogood Estate Winery in Fairplay, the Vineyard Vixens stopped at Bluebird Haven Iris Garden. We do have other interests besides wine!
Bluebird Haven Iris Garden is located on Fairplay Rd. in Somerset, CA, just a few miles down the road from Toogood in southern El Dorado County. It is open year-round but if you are able to visit the garden at the height of the blooming season, usually during May, you’ll be greeted by more than 100,000 irises showing off their vibrant colors, most of which are beyond description. As you drive through the big green gate, you begin to pass by row after row of beautiful blooms. Once you park, you can walk through the rows of cultivated iris to pick your favorites.
This gorgeous Victorian show garden is set on a small knoll. The rows of iris surrounding the gazebo and picnic tables make this a very inviting place to enjoy a picnic lunch or just sit and enjoy the beauty.
Purchasing Bulbs at Bluebird Haven Iris Garden
We all walked around, drooling over the amazing colors and enormous blooms. There is a huge selection including both antique and modern varieties. A member of our group picked out a few she wanted. They weren’t quite ready to be harvested so they will be shipped to her when they are.
A couple of other members of our group decided to buy some of the bulbs that were on special that day. We watched Mary, the proprietress, expertly trim the bulbs while she explained the proper way to plant them. Bulbs are available year round and can be ordered from their website.
I love irises and would have had a hard time picking just a few, but, sadly, I can’t have any. My fence is not high enough to keep the deer out so the only plants I have in my yard are on my small raised deck. No room for bulbs there so I had to be satisfied with photographing them.
Do you plant irises or other bulbs? Seems like the bulbs have some of the most spectacular flowers. Daylily Days at Amador Flower Farm is coming up soon. Watch for that on the blog.
Until next time…
